Creating an Animoto book project

Here is an idea for your book project:

Use Animoto to create the book project. You can pull photos from Flickr Creative Commons and music from Royalty Free Music and Free Play Music. Save images and pictures that are associated with your book, add text and a works cited page saved as a jpeg (in Power Point). Voila! A great way to promote your free reading book. It looks like it is similar to Speak, in that it deals with a serious issue. Also, watch the author speak about writing this book that deals with anorexia.

Dulce de Leche and the best of 2008

A few of you in the Spanish classes asked for the recipe for dulce de leche, so here it is. WARNING: you have to always keep the can of sweetened condensed milk covered with water. I like to cook mine in the slowcooker. I put the can (unopened) in boiling water for 4 hours and voila! You can eat it right out the can, put it on toast, etc. Look for a recipe for alfajores, because they are delicious. For some more Argentine recipes, read this blog.

On a literary note, Booklist has a list of best books for Youth in 2008.

It has been busy this last week of February! The seniors are busily finishing up their final Senior projects in the library. Most sophomores picked out their biography's for "A Life Worth Knowing Project" and the freshman started researching the Civil rights projects. The Juniors are still working on their author research projects.

Just remember if you are struggling or having a hard time, ask! We are here to help you succeed and help show you how to find the information that you need. So come before school, during or after.

Teen Book Festival

Welcome back from break! We've hit the ground running with classes and have been really busy, but I want to let you know about the Teen Book Festival. It is coming up on April 4th at Nazareth College. They have some fantastic authors, such as Tim Green, Sharon Flake, Sarah Zarr and more. Read the brochure and put it on your calendar.

I have received some questions from parents about turnitin.com. According to school policy, students can't use a real email to login. We have assigned them the following way to log on:

FirstnameLastname@mwhs.turnitin.com

They then use their password (that they created) that has 6-12 characters, including one number or symbol.

If you have any problems submitting a paper, please email me or stop by and see me. Turnitin is a valuable tool in combatting plagiarism.

A New Semester

Congratulations on finishing half the year! On Friday, we teachers had a conference day and I spent the morning learning about internet safety. We are looking to use a program called isafe (or if you are a parent, go here). It is very important to be aware of how we put our information out there on the internet and how we conduct ourselves online. Please check it out as you will be hearing more about this in the future!

This week we are busy in the library with juniors logging onto CHOICES, health projects, English projects and the spelling bee!

This time of year I am always excited to see who won and if I have read all the books. I was suprised this year because one of my favorite books, Hunger Games, did not even win a Printz Honor.

The Newbery Medal: The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

You can also listen to (and watch) Neil Gaiman read the book on his website or come check it out at the library.

The Printz Award went to Jellicoe Road which I haven't read but I will soon remedy that!
